This book is the go-to guide for all things vocabulary! It’s full of information about choosing words, providing high quality instruction in vocabulary, and creating a vocabulary-rich environment! It includes suggestions for different student ages too!

The Reading Comprehension Blueprint
This book is a wealth of information about reading comprehension! If you’re wondering about what the science of reading says about teaching reading comprehension, this is truly the book for you! I love the 2nd section of the book the most where Dr. Hennessy breaks down the components of her comprehension blueprint. This is exactly what teachers need to bring research into practice!

How Your Brain Learns to Read
This one is a picture book to read to students but I had to include it here because it’s really one of a kind! I will be reading this to my classes at the beginning of every school year now!

Conquering Dyslexia
This is an amazing book to recommend to parents and teachers who are new to understanding dyslexia. It is an easy read with actionable information for parents trying to navigate dyslexia. I especially loved the anecdotes from real teachers, specialists, and parents!

The Knowledge Gap
I love this book for two big reasons. First, it gives an amazing overview of some of the shifts in reading instruction that have happened in our country over the past century. And second, it makes such a straightforward and logical argument for why content knowledge is so important in the classroom!

Uncovering The Logic of English
This book by Denise Eide is a fantastic introduction to the code of the English language. It is straightforward and easy to read while also being full of valuable information about how spelling works. This is one of my favorite books to recommend to all teachers but especially to teachers new to the SOR and the rules of English!

The Writing Revolution
This is a back-to-basics approach to writing that pulls in foundational writing skills with content knowledge. The argument for writing amazing sentences about authentic content speaks to me on so many levels! This book is meant to span grades K-12 so if you’re an elementary teacher, like myself, you’ll find everything you need in the first half of the book.

The Art & Science of Teaching Primary Reading
This is an amazing read for both beginners to the science of reading and veteran SOR nerds! It’s such an easy-to-read, comprehensive overview that will help any teacher get a better handle on what is meant by the science of reading! My mind was racing with connections and new ideas throughout the whole book. Christopher Such, the author, has a writing style that is enjoyable and to the point. I highly recommend this one!

This is a reference book for all classroom teachers! If you were ever wondering about a specific phonics or spelling rule, you’ll find it here! This book will have a permanent spot on my classroom desk.

This is a fascinating account of the science of reading and our reading brain. I’m slowly working my way through Maryanne Wolf’s detailed writing style!

It’s almost embarrassing to admit that I haven’t finished this classic book by Louisa Moats but it’s next on my “to read” list! I cannot wait to dive into the details of how speech maps to print in our brains!
